Paul: That sounds like a great strategy. I could use some of that thinking, too. These skills are critical for professional development.

Caroline: Newspapers need interested and Web-savvy people to keep moving forward; they can also be a ton of fun. But wherever you end up, solid journalism training will serve you well. Technology is just a tool.

Great post. I struggle mightily in getting my coworkers to embrace this mentality (as I'm sure many people do).

What's worked best for me is to treat my company as if it were a classroom: There are those who want to learn, those who are sort of interested and those who just don't—and won't—care no matter what I do. I focus on the first two groups and do my best to work with each person on an individual level (we've got a ton of employees and I've got other jobs so this isn't always easy). If I can find the one thing that gets through to one person, maybe it'll work on another. Maybe not, but even so, if I get through to one person every so often, that's one less I have to convert.

A very interesting read.
As an aspiring journalist, the future of journalism is, obviously something that concerns me.
The newspaper industry appears to be a dying breed; technology seems to be the way forward.
I just hope that traditional news values don't disappear too!

Not sure I have any immediate answers, but I absolutely agree with the description of where we are now.
I enjoy reading a paper each morning, but am always frustrated to visit the same paper's website a few hours later and find that the content is no different to the print edition.
