The main challenge facing journalism as it moves into a digital format certainly is developing and fine tuning a business model that works and you are offering some useful suggestions about how to address that challenge. It might, however, be worth contemplating HOW one actually goes about building a digital audience i.e. what in terms of CONTENT may be driving people away from more traditional journalism and towards internet versions. There are some great debates and interviews with top journalists about these issues at http://www.ourblook.com/component/option,com_sectionex/Itemid,200076/id,8/view,category/#catid69 which I think extend the discussion.

Good advice there is definitely trends in how to write headlines/content for the web that perform well re: aggregation sites such as digg etc.

Also with how content is presented for maximum exposure.

Doing what your talking about here is key for anyone that wants to make a living writing on the web. Hopefully in the future there will be tools to help automate this process, currently google analytics does a fine job if you set it up correctly with some of the more advanced tagging especially for mp3 plays and downloads of files
